National Curriculum

All the children from the age of five years old are required to follow the National Curriculum in the following subjects.

Core Subjects

 English

The National Literacy Strategy was introduced in 1998 and because of its time allocation is known as the Literacy Hour. English includes Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing and is an integral part of the whole school curriculum.

 Mathematics

The National Numeracy Strategy was implemented in 1999, its structure is similar to that of the Literacy Hour, with all pupils receiving a daily Maths lesson of between 45-60 mins. Setting is used to group children by ability in KS2.

Science

We aim to develop children's scientific skills through first-hand experiences. Pupils are encouraged to solve problems by making close observations, planning, predicting, fair testing and recording their findings in a systematic way,

ICT

Emphasis is placed on the development of communication skills, handling information, modelling and monitoring. An ICT suite with 30workstations and an interactive whiteboard is used by all pupils and each class is timetabled to use this facility.

 Foundation Subjects

Design and Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and Physical Education.

Health Education, Personal and Social Education and Religious Education also form part of the school's curriculum. National Curriculum programmes of study form the basis of the work carried out in the core subjects and it is considered essential that the early skills of reading, writing and calculating be effectively learned.

Documents concerning the LEA's statement of curriculum policy, the Governors' statement of curriculum aims, policy documents, DSCF circulars, and any HMI reports which refer expressly to school etc are available for perusal at the school. The Education Reform Act 1988 does make provision for a parent or other, after informal discussions, to institute a formal complaint about the action of a Governing Body or the Authority in relation to the school curriculum. Official forms for this purpose are available from the LEA.
