SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES

The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities to enrich the lives of the children. These activities extend through sports and pastimes, music, art and drama, and are open to all children

The school considers sport to play an important role in the lives of children. It promotes fitness and health, and encourages children to participate in activities which may become hobbies or interests for life. Team sports promote co-operation with others, encourage team work and develop a positive attitude to competition.

Sports

Park View's sporting facilities include a hall/gymnasium, playing field and three hard play areas. The playing field is marked for football, rounders, cricket and athletics as is seasonally appropriate. A major hard play area is permanently marked with two netball courts and a five-a-side football pitch.

Games lessons form part of the curriculum for pupils in Years 2-6. In addition a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities exist. The school participates in a wide-range of sporting activities promoted by the Prestwich and Whitefield Junior Schools' Sports Association and by the Bury JSSA. Inter-school matches are played in football, netball and cricket and the school enters teams and individuals in athletics, cross-country and swimming events. Children have regular swimming lessons as part of the curriculum in Year 5.

Music

The Bury Music Service provides string, brass and woodwind tuition on the school premises. This tuition is available in the junior department of the school for children who have the necessary aptitude and inclination. A charge is now made for this service, although parents who are in receipt of Income Support may apply for free tuition.

Recorder and choir groups are organised within the school. Musicians are provided with the opportunity to perform in school assemblies, concerts for parents and at external venues.

In Spring term of 2005, the choir participated in the 'Bury Children Sing' Festival of Music, which was held at the Castle Leisure Centre. Their singing was recorded on a CD.

The choir also performed at the Royal Northern College of Music with orchestras and bands from the Bury Youth Music Centre.

In 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 our senior choir performed at the Manchester Evening News Arena in the 'Young Voices in Concert' event. It was a wonderful experience with children joining with 8,000 others to sing to a packed stadium audience.

Book Club

The school runs a book club which offers children the chance to buy paperbacks at reasonable prices once or twice a term.

The Arts

The school places great emphasis on the arts and as well as encouraging the children to explore various painting and drawing techniques we regularly offer the following:

Professional drama workshop and performances

Story telling

Book Fair and Library Service Roadshow

Musical performances and demonstrations

Craft demonstrations and workshops

If you are in school it's well worth a look at the artwork on the main corridor!

The PTA finances visits by professional theatre groups on an annual basis.

The school also encourages pupils to participate in local arts activities. A significant number of pupils, past and present, are active members of the Prestwich Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society.
